President's Corner (Jim Pisula):  As we enter the New Year, I first of all want to thank the out-going officers for the job they did in 2004!  Bob Holston, President, Bert Elings, Secretary (2 years), Bob Bowser, Treasurer, and Bob Henning, Tournament Director.  Their efforts were outstanding and contributed to a successful year for our Men’s Club.  I would also like to thank Del Smith, Mike White & Darryl Pief, and the rest of the Greenhorn staff for their assistance this past year!

Secondly I want to express my appreciation to the following members who volunteered to serve on this years Board:  Rick Parker, Vice President, Ron Rivera, Secretary, Clarence Hartley, Treasurer, John Renati, Handicap & Rules, Chm., Gary Loustalot, Tournament Director, and Chuck Tolerton, Member-at-Large.  We look forward to serving our membership, and putting together a great schedule of events this year.  Our success is dependent on your participation during the year.

I think you would all agree that our course is in excellent condition (love those slick greens).  As you play express your appreciation to Dave Camden and his staff for a job well done!  In this regard, I would like to thank Bob McGill and Bert Elings who are running the Adopt-A-Hole program.  Please sign up for this important program.  It doesn’t take much effort, and we’ll all feel better after putting some TLC into our course.

In closing I wish all of you best wishes for a healthy and enjoyable golf year.  As mentioned during my remarks at our Member’s Appreciation dinner, please feel free to attend our Board meetings (2nd Wednesday of each month).  If you want to bring something to our Board’s attention, contact a Board member so that we can put in on the meeting agenda.

There is an NCGA foundation that members can contribute $20 to and the money is used to help kids get into golf. The mailing address for contributions is:

NCGA 12 MAN TEAM TOURNAMENT:

Joe Panto will be handling the qualifying for the 12-man competition for the season, more information will be forth coming.

USGA HANDICAP COMPETITIONS:  9.3.C

   PLAYERS COMPETING FROM DIFFERENT TEES:

Different tees usually have different USGA Course Ratings.  Since Course Ratings

Reflect the probable scores of scratch golfers, the higher-rated course is more

Difficult, and the players playing from the set of tees with the higher USGA

Course Rating receives additional strokes equal to the difference between the

Course Ratings, with .5 or more rounded upward.

Example 1:  If men playing from the white tees where the men’s USGA Course

Rating is 68.0  compete against men playing from the blue tees where the men’s

USGA Course Rating is 70.1, the men playing from the blue tees will add two

     Strokes (70.1 – 68.0 = 2.1 rounded to 2 strokes) to the Course Handicap.

EXAMPLE

                                                                             Blue Tees     White Tees

Player A playing from the blue tees with index 13.0               15

Player B playing from the white tees with index 13.0                                          14

Player A handicap for the tournament                                         17

Player B handicap for the tournament                                         14

Handicap/Rules Chairman (John Renati):  Well it looks like the New Year started out with a bang, I mean a flood. There haven’t been many rounds of golf played yet this year.  Most of us are out of the habit of posting since we haven’t been playing.  Let's start the New Year off with a bang and make it a point to post all of your scores.  It is important to our club that you have an accurate GHIN index.  Posting all of your scores both high scores and low scores will make you more competitive in tournaments both at home and away.

It is your personal responsibility to make accurate postings.  Scores attained from both, nine and eighteen hole play should all be posted.

As a reminder, you must adjust you gross score according to the following table.

EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL

Course Handicap

Maximum Number
on Any Hole

9 or less

Double bogey

10 through 19

7

20 through 29

Have a great golfing year and remember to post.

Treasurer (Clarence Hartley): Hole In One Program

The Hole in One program is sponsored  by the men's club for men's club members and is intended to help you celebrate the finest achievement in golf that is A Hole in One. Here's how the program works.

  1. You must be a men's club member in good standing. Basically that means that your dues are paid.
  2. You must be playing in a foursome or a threesome if authorized by our pro, as sometimes happens in a men's club event when it is needed to round out the play.
  3. After the round in which the hole in one occurs you may wish to buy drinks on your account and for as long as you wish and have those drinks charged to your account. Then notify an officer of the men's club for reimbursement of up to $250, or the bar tab created at the end of the hole in one or the $250. Whichever is LESS.

The cost of your reimbursement is a budgeted item in the men's club and actually becomes an expense, however this event must be celebrated in proper fashion. All disputes shall be resolved by the men's club president or board of directors and it is hoped that all of these events shall be positive in nature.

Our insurance covers a Hole-In-One at Greenhorn Creek, and also if you have one in a Greenhorn Creek sanctioned event while playing at another course.

Member-at-Large (Chuck Tolerton):  The nine holers are playing every Wednesday starting at 10:00A.M.  Please plan to join us if you are a new golfer or just have time for nine holes. Thanks to Daryl Pief for all the help in organizing the scores from weekly men's club outings and a welcome for new members, Bruce Chappell, Cragi Turco, Mike Turnbow, Jay Rohn, and Al Muccia.

Adopt-A-Hole (Bob McGill):  Greenhorn Creek will sponsor its Adopt A Hole Program beginning January of 2005.  The purpose of this program is to improve the playability, condition and beauty of our golf facility.  Members will be encouraged to ADOPT (sign up to care for) a hole.  Bret Harte High School will also participate in this program.  A sign up board will be displayed in the lobby of Camps for you to indicate which hole you will “ADOPT”.  Details of the program will be posted on the sign up board.   Greenhorn Creek will assist in making equipment (sand & ball mark repair tools) available in a convenient location for member access.

In the past this has been a social event with members patrolling the greens and fairways in the late afternoon, many times in groups and sometimes with libations!!!  The result has been an improved golf facility and social friendships.  Greenhorn Creek management will encourage the membership with a bi-monthly lunch at Camps.   Sign up early for your choice of a hole. Its good for you, its good for our community and its good for Greenhorn Creek Golf Resort.

For more information contact Bob McGill (736-1723) or Bert Elings (736-2859).

Secretary's Notes (Ron Rivera):  As the new secretary I want to invite all the members to feel free to send me a note whenever they have something they would like to include in the Nugget. I look forward to the coming year and I hope I can do as good a job as our previous secretary Bert Elings. I want to personally thank Bert for his complete turnover.

Pro-Staff (Darryl "Coach" Pief):  Greetings and Happy New Year

John, myself and our outside staff would like to thank all our members for their kindness and generosity during this holiday season.  We also appreciate all your efforts during the year that make us feel at home and such a valuable part of this facility.  Looking forward to an exciting and positive 2005.

Times they are a changing.  I think that was a great song in the 60's or 70's.  What's that got to do with golf?  I'm not completely sure but it seemed a great place to start.

Mr. John Lucido has been promoted to golf shop manager.  His responsibilities will include all merchandise purchases, inventory, and special orders.  Any questions that you or yours might have regarding these areas should be brought to his attention.

Should anyone still be owed a lesson or multiple lessons by Mr. Mike White, please contact Mike at home (209-728-9043) or at Twain Harte Golf Course (209-586-0208).

Exactly what my duties will be and how much responsibility I'm willing to accept (old retired person) is still to be determined.  I'm definitely not planning to leave and would like to continue with the things that I like to do best, that includes teaching, tournament operations, and customer service behind the counter.  We have fantastic members here at Greenhorn and any way that I can positively affect your experience will continue to be my goal.

One thing that I believe to be important is your ability to discuss overall operations with me at any time.  I would request that when you have a discussion item in mind that we hold that discussion in my office and not at the front counter. Should the discussion item be positive or negative makes no difference, it's the professional thing to do.

What about that golf swing?  It sure comes and goes doesn't it!  If you haven't decided on that New Years fitness program now is the time to start.  Nothing will prolong our ability to continue with this game at an acceptable level than to stay in shape, eat healthy and maintain a positive attitude.

 Get It Done!
